intafon The tracks on Merlin's Voice are a great blend of ambient and beat-driven IDM, both laid back and upbeat, with moments reminiscent of early Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada. Karellen's Decision IMO is the stand out track, as I am a sucker for chopped vocals and the sound of ping pong balls hitting rackets. Favorite track: Karellen's Decision.

about

What does the voice of a wizard sound like?

On his thrilling, wide-eyed new LP, Chris Otchy gets deep under the hood of electronic music’s emotional mechanics and navigates the borderland between lonely bedrooms and limitless dancefloors.

'Merlin's Voice' marks a departure from Chris's characteristic ambient sound, witnessing his altered trajectory through subterranean bass frequencies and heavenly rhythms. The dreaminess has gone nowhere, but the psychedelic drift has been floated atop a more significant low end thump.

“I wanted to create music for where many of us would like to be—and where few of us were able to play in 2020,” he says, “lo-fi underground clubs, euphoric outdoor events, and intimate after parties.”

Buried in its soundscapes are the echoes and surreality of an imagined life – or a remembered one – where exuberant youth dance and flirt to ecstatic, dreamy music with heart and groove. It’s industrialized music tied together with found sound, sublime synthesis, and whispered dreams. Fuzz and field recordings have always been a staple of Chris’s sound—here they form a backdrop for hypnotic rhythms and swirling synths.

What does the voice of a wizard sound like?

These seven tracks take the legendary mystic from leaden antiquity and re-cast the figure into digital gold, ready to transmute our nightmares into extraordinary fantasies.
