about

The second release in my Sacred Mountain EP series focuses on Mount Kailash in the Tibetan Himalayas.

I am honored to be joined in this release by my friends, Chroma Sea, who did an excellent remix. Thank you, Chroma Sea!

Mount Kailash is considered to be sacred in four religions: Hinduism, Bon, Buddhism, and Jainism. It's also known as Tisé mountain, which means "water peak" or "river peak," connoting the mountain's status as the source of several rivers that all begin in the Kailash-Lake Manasarovara region.

In Hinduism, Kailash is traditionally recognized as the home of Shiva and Parvati, who reside there with their children, Ganesha and Kartikeya. The Ramayana recounts a story of the demon king Ravana attempting to uproot Kailash as retaliation against Lord Shiva, who in turn pressed his right big toe upon the mountain, trapping Ravana beneath it.

Mount Kailash is also known as Mount Meru -- the central structure in Buddhist cosmology.

Kailash is a major pilgrimage site for several religions, following a tradition going back thousands of years. Pilgrims believe that circumambulating the mountain on foot is a holy ritual that will bring good fortune. Hindus and Buddhists believe making the trip in the clockwise direction is the most auspicious, while Jains and Bönpos circumambulate the mountain in a counterclockwise direction. The path around Mount Kailash is 32 miles long. Some pilgrims believe that the entire walk should be made in a single day, which is no easy task. Some of the most devout perform body length prostrations over the entire distance, which requires at least four weeks of physical endurance.

According to all religions that revere the mountain, setting foot on its slopes is a dire sin. It is a popular belief that the stairways on Mount Kailash lead to heaven.
