about

The final in my series of Sacred Mountain EPs focuses on two holy elevations - Olympus in Greece and Shasta in California.

In Greek Mythology, Mt. Olympus was the home of 12 gods who dwelt in incredible palaces of marble and gold. It was mainly inhabited by Zeus and his sister-wife, Hera, but it was also occupied by Demeter, Athena, Aphrodite, and Apollo.

Homer described Olympus in the Iliad as an ancient acropolis--a fortified hill-top and palace complex located just below the peaks. The mountain was enclosed in cloud to guard the gods’ privacy from prying human eyes.

Mount Shasta is a volcano in the Cascade Range in Siskiyou County, California. The Native American Klamath Tribes held that Mount Shasta is inhabited by the Spirit of the Above-World, Skell, who descended from heaven to the mountain's summit at the request of a Klamath chief. Skell fought with Spirit of the Below-World, Llao, who resided at Mount Mazama by throwing hot rocks and lava. A group of Native Americans from the McCloud River area still practice rituals on the mountain today.

Mount Shasta has also been a focus for legends centered on a hidden city of advanced beings from the lost continent of Lemuria. In 1931, the Rosicrucians published "Lemuria: the Lost Continent of the Pacific" about this lost civilization that supposedly dwelt beneath the mountain. In August 1987, believers in the spiritual significance of the Harmonic Convergence described Mount Shasta as one of a small number of global "power centers."
