Ferocious with life, constantly shifting, always in motion, tide pools are places where things happen fast. At the mercy of harsh winds, freezing water, baking sun, and the relentless pounding of waves, few creatures would be able to exist in these primitive conditions. And yet, Northern California hosts one of the most diverse and bustling intertidal regions in the world.

Tide pools are microcosms of the ocean, where life emerged. As John Steinbeck wrote, "It is advisable to look from the tide pool to the stars and then back to the tide pool again."

These rugged seascapes are in fact galaxies--but ones we can wrap our minds around, crawl into, and examine while fog encroaches in the fading afternoon light.
